I’ve been quiet over the past few months, soaking up the South African holiday festivities while also making the most of the international peak editing season. With love in the air and a temporary lull in projects, it feels like the perfect time to reflect on what gets me out of bed (and what keeps me under the covers) as a freelance editor.
Freelance text editing is a lot like a long-term relationship. Having spent nine years working away from home and my husband, I know all too well the ups and downs that come with committing to the long haul. Much like love, editing has its highs, lows, and its fair share of lessons. So, as Valentine’s Day disappears in the rear-view mirror, here’s a heartfelt look at what I adore—and what gets me down—about my career as a freelance editor.
There’s something deeply satisfying about taking a raw piece of writingand shaping it into something clear, concise, and compelling. Whether polishing an academic paper, breathing life into a memoir, or making a CV more engaging, I love guiding writers toward a final draft that truly shines. That moment when a client says, “This is so much better!” That’s the editorial equivalent of a love letter.
No rigid 7-to-4 schedule? Count me in. I can edit in my pyjamas (although I never do), take an afternoon coffee break without guilt (ok, maybe a little guilt), or work at night when creativity strikes. The flexibility to design my own workday is a dream come true. But, like any relationship, too much freedom comes with downsides—work can easily creep into evenings, weekends, and even holidays. On the flip side, life’s mundane tasks can quickly eat away at your productive time. It’s a slippery slope either way.
Intellectual stimulation is one of the biggest perks of being a freelance editor. One day, I’m deep-diving into Molecular Biology; the next, I’m refining the narrative in a travel memoir. Every project introduces me to new ideas, industries, and perspectives. It’s like going on a coffee date with a different topic every week—the thrill of learning something new never gets old.
Freelancing means no pointless meetings and no long commutes. My workspace is wherever I choose, and my “coworkers” are my favourite plants, books, and coffee mug. Yet, as much as I love working independently, there are moments when I miss the camaraderie of an office. Editing is a solitary job; sometimes, I just want a casual coffee break that doesn’t involve talking to my cat. Online forums offer some connection, but I’m old-fashioned—building personal connections through a screen is challenging.
As a freelancer, you’re either feasting, juggling too many projects at once, or starving, with an eerily quiet inbox leaving you wondering if your clients have ghosted you. Unlike a traditional job with a steady salary, the financial unpredictability can be nerve-wracking! Let’s also not forget our many hats: editor, debt collector, sales manager, marketer, bookkeeper, and administrator. And let’s be honest—there’s nothing romantic about chasing down an overdue invoice.
Freelance editing has its ups and downs, just like any great relationship. There are moments of frustration, but the rewards—creative freedom, intellectual engagement, and the joy of helping others express themselves—make it all worthwhile. So, this Valentine’s Day, I’m raising a cup of coffee to the craft I love—quirks and all.
Here’s to the romance of editing in all its imperfect, wonderful glory.
